These are some of the high-end, full time projects that I have worked on.

The Last of Us Online (Canceled)

A live service title from Naughty Dog that combined Battle Royale elements with deliberate, brutal gameplay and narrative tension of TLOU. Title was cancelled and team was consolidated.I created level components and mission systems to facilitate unique multi-step missions that can change mid-match. This impacted player choice and gave both narrative and gameplay rewards for different outcomes.

Assassin's Creed NEXUS VR

Virtual Reality title developed by Red Storm Entertainment set in the Assassin's Creed universe that wanted to enhance the parkour known by the series with VR. Available on the Meta Quest.I worked on Level and Puzzle Design, specifically focusing on the American Colony missions.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

An Action-Adventure Title that infused the world of Avatar with the Ubisoft open world formula. Available on all Modern Platforms.I worked with a small Red Storm Entertainment team that supported Massive Entertainment in laying the foundations of the game. I blocked out level design, scripted multifaceted quests, and programmed Enemy/Animal AI behaviors.

Payout

A mobile application to streamline payments from restaurant tables.Brought on as a contractor, and assisted in creating and debugging backend code in a push to get a deployable for company investors.

Paragon (EoS)

A Third Person MOBA that pitted 5 man teams against each other as they tried to level up their specialized characters to take out the enemy base.I was able to work part time with the team through my college's game development club. I collaborated with UX leads, offering insights on gameplay and UI presentation in both written and verbal formats. I also conducted QA work, assisting with bug hunting and replication tasks.

Indie Work

These are long term projects that I have worked on usually with friends or other passionate developers. While none of these are paid projects, it is things that helped me grow as a developer and were things that I am highly passionate about.

Project B-FER: Prime Cut

A puzzle-focused Visual Novel inspired by 999 where a group of strangers try to escape a MBTA train. Available on Steam.Acted as a gameplay engineer supervisor and assisted in system implementation and code cleanup.

Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX (Canceled)

A Persona / SMT parody featuring the Golden Girls as they travel through dungeons from Miami to Manhattan. Got a lot of traction through Twitter and Tumblr. Cancelled October 2023I worked on designing, implementing, and balancing the gameplay systems as well as aligning narrative and gameplay hooks for the title.

Coup d'Amour

A 2v2 top-down, twin-stick shooter where you must sever the (literal) ties of the opposing team.Acted as the Lead Developer, focusing on UI, game logic, and Blueprint design.

Free Range Frogs

A VR incremental-style game where you collect frogs to sell and upgrade your equipment.I implemented the creature AI and physics simulations, as well as some 3D modeling.

Albina

A VR escape room puzzle game where you try to escape the space shuttle before time runs out.Worked on the puzzle design and general scripting for the title

Rowdy Robots

An online multiplayer Battlebots inspired action game where players attempt to destroy or ring out enemy combatants.I acted as Lead Programmer, and led a team over 4 months, and then was presented to members of Red Storm Entertainment for our final. Outside of supervision and teaching other students the engine, I focused on networking API, collision physics, and UI logic.

Lifeworld VR

A VR escape room puzzle game, where you try to break out of a series of rooms while learning about your captor and the mystery they want you to solve.This was a project within the NCSU VG Development Club, where I worked on puzzle design, narrative design, and general gameplay programming.

Excavalia

A video game pitch that had a 2D brawler / collection game where specialized robots battled for resources.Never got picked up but I still think about the concept a lot and want to revist this.

Interactive Museum Tour

A project that partnered with a local museum to provide a digital tour guide for history exhibits that was engaging and educational.I designed a tour app that had gamified elements to add extra involvement from the exhibit-goers and implemented the mobile application solo.

Narrative Design Project

A project covering narrative design and player choice through twine. The story was about ancient hunter gathers. 2 week long project.Wrote the story, coded, created the art, and implemented it all together in an HTML file.

William O'Tuel, also known as PurelySalty, is an American Software Engineer and Game Developer, with experience in scripting and systems implementation. Currently based in Charlotte, North Carolina.Experienced in Unreal, Godot, Unity, and most of the popular coding languages, William developed several game projects for AAA studios like Red Storm Entertainment and Naughty Dog, as well as with indie teams.Outside of Game Development, William has worked in instructor and technical support roles in the residential and academic sectors. They worked as a teaching assistant throughout college and took their love to teach with them once they graduated, always saving time to be able to help and tutor while still working full time jobs.During their free time, they enjoy watching old films and shows as well as playing games to inspire new work.
